About Malaria

What is Malaria?

Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease caused by a parasite. It is a serious and sometimes fatal disease that is most common in tropical and subtropical regions. Symptoms of malaria include fever, chills, and flu-like illness. Treatment for malaria typically involves the use of antimalarial drugs.

What are the symptoms of Malaria?

The most common symptoms of malaria include fever, chills, sweats, headache, nausea, vomiting, muscle aches, and fatigue. Other symptoms may include anemia, jaundice, hemoglobin in the urine, and convulsions.

What are the causes of Malaria?

Malaria is caused by a parasite called Plasmodium, which is transmitted through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. When a mosquito bites an infected person, it takes in Plasmodium parasites, which then multiply inside the mosquito. When the mosquito bites another person, the parasites are injected into the person’s bloodstream, where they travel to the liver and then to the red blood cells. The parasites then multiply inside the red blood cells, causing the symptoms of malaria.

What are the treatments for Malaria?

1. Antimalarial medications: These medications are used to treat and prevent malaria. Examples include chloroquine, quinine, mefloquine, doxycycline, and artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs).

2. Mosquito control: This involves using insecticides to kill mosquitoes and using bed nets to prevent bites.

3. Vaccines: There are currently two vaccines available to help prevent malaria.

4. Supportive care: This includes providing fluids and medications to treat symptoms and prevent complications.
