About Laryngocele

What is Laryngocele?

Laryngocele is a rare condition in which a sac of air or fluid forms in the larynx (voice box). It can cause hoarseness, difficulty breathing, and a feeling of pressure in the neck. In some cases, it can also cause a lump in the neck. Treatment usually involves draining the sac and, in some cases, surgery.

What are the symptoms of Laryngocele?

The most common symptom of laryngocele is a lump or swelling in the neck. Other symptoms may include:

- Hoarseness
- Difficulty swallowing
- Coughing
- Shortness of breath
- Pain in the neck or throat
- A feeling of pressure in the neck
- A sensation of something stuck in the throat
- A feeling of fullness in the neck
- A visible lump in the neck

What are the causes of Laryngocele?

The exact cause of laryngocele is unknown, but it is believed to be related to increased pressure in the larynx (voice box). This increased pressure can be caused by a variety of factors, including:

• Chronic coughing

• Straining during activities such as weightlifting

• Vocal abuse or misuse

• Chronic sinusitis

• Chronic bronchitis

• Chronic laryngitis

• Abnormal anatomy of the larynx

• Congenital abnormalities

• Trauma to the larynx

• Tumors of the larynx

• Certain medications

What are the treatments for Laryngocele?

1. Observation: In some cases, a laryngocele may not require any treatment and can be monitored over time.

2. Surgery: Surgery is the most common treatment for laryngocele. During the procedure, the laryngocele is removed and the opening in the larynx is closed.

3. Voice Therapy: Voice therapy may be recommended to help strengthen the muscles of the larynx and improve vocal quality.

4. Medication: In some cases, medications may be prescribed to reduce inflammation and swelling.

What are the risk factors for Laryngocele?

1. Chronic laryngitis
2. Chronic coughing
3. Smoking
4. Chronic sinusitis
5. Chronic bronchitis
6. Chronic throat infections
7. Trauma to the neck or throat
8. Surgery on the neck or throat
9. Congenital abnormalities of the larynx
10. Abnormalities of the lymphatic system

Is there a cure/medications for Laryngocele?

There is no cure for laryngocele, but medications may be prescribed to reduce swelling and inflammation. Surgery may be recommended in some cases to remove the laryngocele.
